Policy Valet — frequently asked questions

Is Policy Valet an insurance company?+

No. Policy Valet is an educational website and referral directory. We explain how different types of personal and business insurance work and connect you with independent, licensed agents. We don't sell insurance, underwrite policies, or give advice about your specific situation.

What's the difference between a Business Owner's Policy (BOP) and general liability insurance?+

General liability insurance covers claims of bodily injury, property damage and advertising injury on its own. A BOP bundles general liability with commercial property coverage (and often business interruption) into one policy, which is usually simpler and more affordable for small businesses that need both.

Do I need flood or earthquake insurance if I already have homeowners insurance?+

Usually not automatically — most standard homeowners policies exclude flood and earthquake damage, so they're sold as separate policies or endorsements. Whether you need either depends on where you live; a licensed agent can explain your area's exposure.

Is Policy Valet connected with Medicare or the federal government?+

No. Policy Valet is not connected with or endorsed by the U.S. government or the federal Medicare program. We explain how Medicare, Medigap and Medicare Advantage plans generally work and connect you with licensed Medicare agents.

How do insurance agents receive referrals through Policy Valet?+

Licensed agents can create a free listing, or sponsor a ZIP code for one category, a ZIP code across twenty categories, an entire state across all categories, or go nationwide and unlimited — so shoppers researching that category in that area or nationwide are connected to them.

Does an agent need a different license for each type of insurance?+

Often yes. Many states license personal lines, commercial lines, life, health and surety separately, and agents must be licensed for the specific line they're writing and in the states where they operate. Ask any agent what they're licensed to sell before you talk specifics.

What should I ask before buying any policy?+

Ask exactly what's covered and excluded, your limits and deductibles, how claims are filed, whether bundling multiple policies with one carrier could simplify things, and how often you should review the policy as your situation changes.
