Neuropathy Boot — frequently asked questions

What is peripheral neuropathy?+

Peripheral neuropathy is nerve damage outside the brain and spinal cord that causes numbness, tingling, burning pain or weakness, most often in the feet and hands. It has many possible causes, including diabetes, chemotherapy, alcohol use, autoimmune conditions and, in some cases, no clear cause at all.

Can neuropathy be cured?+

Neuropathy usually cannot be cured, but treatment can often manage pain, slow progression and protect against complications like falls and foot wounds. How much improvement is possible depends heavily on the underlying cause, so an accurate diagnosis matters.

What's the difference between diabetic and other types of peripheral neuropathy?+

Diabetic neuropathy is caused specifically by long-term high blood sugar damaging nerves, while other peripheral neuropathies can stem from chemotherapy, alcohol use, autoimmune disease, vitamin deficiencies, or an unknown cause. The cause affects both the treatment plan and the outlook, so a doctor needs to identify it specifically.

Do TENS units, light therapy devices or neuropathy socks actually help?+

Many people use TENS units, light therapy devices, compression socks and specialized footwear to help manage neuropathy symptoms, and some may offer relief for certain people, but none of these devices cure neuropathy or regenerate nerves. Ask a provider which, if any, make sense for your case, and check a device's FDA clearance status before buying.

Why does foot care matter so much with neuropathy?+

Neuropathy can reduce or eliminate the ability to feel pain in the feet, so cuts, blisters or pressure sores can go unnoticed and worsen into serious wounds or infections. Daily foot checks and prompt attention to any new wound are essential, especially for people with diabetes.

Why does neuropathy increase fall risk?+

Numbness and weakness from neuropathy make it harder to sense the ground and keep balance, which raises the risk of falls and related injuries. Balance training, physical therapy and home safety changes can meaningfully lower that risk.

What should I do about a foot wound if I have neuropathy?+

See a clinician promptly for any new foot wound, sore, redness or swelling — reduced sensation from neuropathy can hide how serious it's becoming. Don't wait for pain as a warning sign; by the time a neuropathic foot hurts, a wound may already be advanced.
