Illiquid Estate — frequently asked questions

What does "illiquid assets" mean?+

Illiquid assets are things of real value that can't easily or quickly be converted to cash — private company stock, restricted shares, art and collectibles, real estate equity, and similar holdings.

How can I borrow against assets I can't easily sell?+

Depending on the asset, options include securities-based lines of credit, restricted or pre-IPO stock loans, art- and collectibles-backed loans, real estate equity bridge loans, and monetizing structured settlements, annuities, life insurance policies or royalty streams. A liquidity advisor can explain which fit your situation.

What is a securities-based line of credit, and what's the risk?+

It's a loan secured by an investment portfolio instead of selling it. The main risk is a margin call or forced sale of the collateral if the portfolio's value drops — ask a licensed advisor to explain this in detail before borrowing.

Can I borrow against private company stock I own?+

Sometimes, though options are more limited than for public stock since there's no public market to set a price — a specialist can walk through what's realistic for your specific holding.

What is a life settlement?+

A life settlement is the sale of an existing life insurance policy to a third party for a lump sum, generally worth more than the cash surrender value but less than the death benefit. It's a regulated transaction that varies by state.

What is a structured settlement buyout?+

It's selling some or all of your future structured settlement payments for a lump sum today. These transfers are regulated, often require court approval, and are generally irreversible — a licensed professional can explain the process in your state.

How do advisors receive referrals through this site?+

Advisors can list for free, or sponsor a ZIP code, 10 ZIP codes, or an entire state so asset holders in that area who ask for help are connected to them.
